Guthrie Family Rides Again

ARLO AND KIN SET OUT ON MASSIVE TOUR INTO 2010

"The Guthries are the first family of American folk. They practice what Woody preached." -Vanity Fair

"[Woody] Guthrie music is alive and well, and that the legacy is in good hands." -Robert Price, New Jersey Herald

This month, folk music icon Arlo Guthrie will begin his trek across North America with three generations of Guthries for "Guthrie Family Rides Again."

The concerts on the upcoming "Guthrie Family Rides Again" tour will feature Arlo's standards as well as a selection of unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics recently put to music by such distinguished artists as Billy Bragg, Wilco, Eliza Gilkyson, Janis Ian, Wenzel, The Klezmatics, and others. With many notable musicians from around the world contributing to keep the work of Woody Guthrie alive and well, the Guthrie Family will pay tribute to these artists as they perform some of the newly composed tunes.

"Guthrie Family Rides Again" spotlights three generations of Guthries including Arlo's son Abe, who has contributed keyboards and backing vocals to his father's live shows since the '80s. His daughters Cathy, Annie and Sarah Lee Guthrie, all of who have their own bustling music careers, will support by singing songs and accompanying on acoustic guitars. Sarah Lee's musical partner and husband Johnny Irion (a JamBase fave?learn more here) will lead songs and lend his stalwart guitar playing. The youngest generation of Guthrie kids will join in the fun on select songs.

Bound to Cover Just a Little More Ground: The Dead Tour New York

Bound to Cover Just a Little More Ground: The Dead Tour New York - The Dead wrapped up a busy, four-performance, single-day run (http://www.dead.net/dead09)
through New York at around 1 AM Wednesday morning with a packed performance at the 3,200 capacity Roseland Ballroom. The gig was The Dead’s first official appearance at Roseland, though all the members of the group besides Bill Kreutzmann have played the room in the past decade: Bob Weir and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti appeared at the 2002 Jammy Awards, Mickey Hart headlined as a member of Hydra, Phil Lesh performed both with Phil Lesh & Friends and at the One For Woody Benefit and the New York-based Warren Haynes has commanded the stage countless times with all his primary bands. While the night’s two preceding performances were limited to a shade over an hour, the group’s Roseland gig clocked in at over 100 minutes and had the feel of one of the group’s trademark, exploratory second sets. Like both of The Dead’s earlier performances, venue staff also let in ticketless fans as the show drew near.

The Dead will open its first proper tour since 2004 in Greensboro, NC on April 12. Please click hear to see (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu0Q7lLYssQ) Weir, Lesh and Haynes performances on The View Tuesday morning. [Relix News]
