Cave Singers U.S. Tour Dates
The Cave Singers Seattle's The Cave Singers perform dramatic, forlorn and occasionally triumphant music in a wonderfully autumnal haze.
Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer, Ladyhawk), Welcome Joy shows the trio picking up where they left off after debut album Invitation Songs, featuring the additional vocal talents of Amber Webber (Black Mountain, Lightning Dust) and Ashley Webber (Lightning Dust). The Cave Singers have previously shared the stage with the likes of Band Of Horses, Black Mountain, Death Cab For Cutie, Department Of Eagles, Dr. Dog, Shearwater and Lighting Dust, to name a few.
Their next U.S. Tour, kicks off with a comprehensive run in their home state of Washington, where they will joined by The Dutchess and The Duke and Moondoggies on most dates. They'll next play during this year's SXSW and continue on the road through the Midwest and Northwest.

Balkan Beat Box: Album/Tour
Balkan Beat Box Balkan Beat Box's highly anticipated new set, Blue Eyed Black Boy, is due out April 27 on Nat Geo Music. The album follows 2007's Nu Med.
Blue Eyed Black Boy was recorded in Tel Aviv and Belgrade in the midst of anti-Kosovo riots.
"It was a very tense atmosphere, but we were in our studio, away from all that, translating that intense energy into something positive and good," says Ori Kaplan, saxophone player and 1/3 of the Balkan Beat Box trio.
Self-produced by Balkan Beat Box, Blue Eyed Black Boy features a variety of musical instruments and guest appearances, including a local gypsy orchestra from Belgrade called Jovica Ajdarevic Orkestar. The album combines the musical elements of Mediterranean and Balkan traditions with hip hop beats and punk influences.
"It's always amazing when the three of us get together in the studio," says Kaplan. "It's a great dynamic that none of us ever had before in a band, a true collaboration. Each of us has his specialty, Tamir brings the beats and production, Tomer is the lyricist, and I do the melodies and the horns. We bring these three elements together so naturally. We trigger off each other."
Balkan Beat Box will bring their live show to the U.S. with a handful of tour dates in March.

Graham Nash Tribute
w/ Prince Billy, Fleet Fox, Benson
BE YOURSELF: A TRIBUTE TO GRAHAM NASH'S SONGS FOR BEGINNERS TO BE RELEASED MAY 25
ROBIN PECKNOLD, BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY, VETIVER, JOHNATHAN RICE
BRENDAN BENSON AND MORE CONTRIBUTE COVERS OF THE NASH CLASSICS
Legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash's emotionally charged solo debut Songs For Beginners was first released in 1971 and came on the heels of a temporary split with his CSN band mates, David Crosby and Stephen Stills, and a permanent break with his then-love, Joni Mitchell. The album was a hit, climbing to #15 on the Billboard chart and introducing the now-classic songs "Military Madness," "Simple Man," "Used To Be A King," and the Top 40 single "Chicago." Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash first rose to stardom with British Invasion hit-makers The Hollies. He went on to co-found the rock super groups Crosby, Stills & Nash and CSM&Y and remains active with both configurations. Throughout it all, Nash has pursued an acclaimed solo career, beginning with the 1971 gem Songs for Beginners. The songs from this classic have stood the almighty test of time and have been covered by a long list of music makers across the globe.
Now, flash forward to 2010, Nile Nash & Britt Govea of (((folkYEAH!))) presents have assembled an all star lineup of contemporary music leaders such as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Robin Pecknold (of Fleet Foxes), Brendan Benson (of The Raconteurs), Vetiver, Alela Diane, Sleepy Sun, Mariee Sioux & Greg Weeks (from Espers), Port O Brien with The Papercuts, The Moore Brothers and Graham's own daughter, Nile Nash. All of these contemporary artists have come together to honor and celebrate Graham's first solo LP, Songs For Beginners. The artists put a unique spin on each song, making it his or her own while also honoring the timeless vibe of the original recordings. Some stay true to the arrangements that Graham and his Bay Area musician pals laid down in 1970, while others go for a completely fresh reinterpretation. Each track is sure to delight and introduce these already epic and timeless songs to a new generation of music lovers. This tribute LP, titled Be Yourself: A Tribute To Graham Nash's Songs For Beginners, will be released via Grass Roots Records in Spring 2010.
All of the songs on this inspired collection were recorded between May and October of 2009. A few selections from Graham's classic second solo release Wild Tales have also been recorded; Johnathan Rice handles "On The Line," Tyson Vogel (of Two Gallants) takes "Hey You (Looking At The Moon)" to another place, and Jonathan Wilson (of Chris Robinson's Wooden Family, Jenny Lewis, Elvis Costello) featuring an all star Laurel Canyon lineup recreates the now-classic Wild Tales jam "And So It Goes (Music Gets You High)."
In order to maintain the righteous tone of the original record and to also continue Graham's lifelong commitment to educating our next generation, Graham, Nile, the artists, and Grass Roots Records are donating a portion of the proceeds from the record to Wavy Gravy's Camp Winnarainbow. Through the use of music, acrobatics, games and production this circus and performing arts camp in the Mendocino woods of northern California teaches children and adults tools for building self-esteem, community, conflict resolution, communication and plain old merriment.
Be Yourself: A Tribute To Graham Nash's Songs For Beginners will be released on May 25. A limited number 1000 editions of 180 gram vinyl will be pressed and will include a bonus 7 inch of the additional material. This will be available only through the Grassroots Records website, grassrootsrecordco.com. Pre-orders begin February 15 and will be fulfilled on a first come, first serve basis.

Ozomatli: Album & Tour Dates
Ozomatli Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli are set to release their new album, Fire Away April 20 on Mercer Street Records / Downtown Records.
Fire Away is the Grammy Award-winning band's fifth studio full-length, and first for the NYC based Mercer Street Records / Downtown Records. Produced by acclaimed producer Tony Berg (Aimee Mann, Pete Yorn), Fire Away features eleven new Ozo songs.
Ozomatli's music is a collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga.
2009 proved to be a busy year for Ozomatli, serving as U.S. cultural ambassadors with a U.S. sponsored State Department trip that included Ozomatli community outreach and performances in Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand. The band was also honored to play for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's 32nd Annual Award Gala, held in Washington DC in September.
2010 looks to continue Ozomatli's feverish pace. In addition to hitting the road in support of Fire Away, in February Ozomatli will be performing at the TED Conference and two shows in Hawaii. March brings two shows at the SXSW Festival in Austin, collaborating with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra for the 125th Pops Anniversary Celebration in early May, and once again serving as U.S. Cultural Ambassadors with a State Department trip to China and Mongolia.

New Monsoon/Izabella | 02.06 | S.F.
New Monsoon/Izabella :: 02.06.10 :: Great American Music Hall :: San Francisco, CA
Talent will out.
New Monsoon :: 02.06 :: San Francisco It's an expression I adore because it basically says that one's gifts will shine through regardless of the hardships, disregard and other flotsam hurled at anyone brave enough to put their passion and art in the public eye. Frequently, riches, as defined by the culture at large, will elude even the most talented folks. It's just one of the cruel facts of life, where less-than-half-talents tapped by the corporate machine thrive and real artists chip away in their rag-and-bone way. However, there are rewards in this life far greater than a sack of silver, and following one's vision and fully exploring one's craft offer some pretty sweet satisfaction.
Such were my thoughts during this wholly enjoyable, musically dense evening inside one of San Francisco's most storied venues as two of the most consistently satisfying, sonically lush bands in Northern California plied their trade. I've known most of the members of New Monsoon for close to a decade, and the rhythm section of Izabella for close to the same, and yet each time I see both acts play they're all just a bit better - generally sharper, moving with greater group fluidity, full of a seemingly endless supply of solos that remind one why such spotlights flip our switch so thoroughly. And this long, happy night at the Great American Music Hall had an even more pronounced sense that every dude onstage was exactly where the universe meant them to be. An ebullient positivity permeated the room. I almost want to kick my own ass writing something so saccharine but there was no denying that being in this space, awash in this music, one felt slightly scrubbed and returned to the outside world a touch better. What drains the sap from the positive edge both bands possess is an insistence that reality be acknowledged and massaged into their compositions. Thus, one finds sounds that give them wings but have a very human weight, which may make it harder to achieve liftoff but make it all the more rewarding when one hits open air.
Mark Karan & Jeff Miller :: 02.06 :: San Francisco In a nutshell, Izabella and New Monsoon are rock bands in the mold of the 60s/70s greats, where the basic character is rock but they're unafraid to incorporate numerous other elements. So one picks up on the jazz sweep of Chicago and the Allmans, the Latin bent of Traffic and War, the street soul of the Doobie Brothers and the folk leanings of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Poco, but only in the vaguest ways - like their forebears, they are doing their own thing. What amazes me, even after all these years, is how wonderfully accessible both groups are; not just approachable but active in their reaching out. They pull us from our spot on the bench and get us into the game. Even arriving to their show wicked tired or emotionally off-kilter, one soon finds themselves letting their resistance and hardness drop. I've experienced it countless times with their music, especially live, and dragging in after a particularly challenging working week this Saturday it happened again. From Izabella's opening notes - a warming breeze out of a rainy day - through two magnificent sets by New Monsoon - embiggened further by periodic guest spots from RatDog's guitar gaucho Mark Karan and former Monsooner and tabla stud Rajiv Parikh - one felt a connective charge surge between the large crowd and the musicians. Some trips we take together, whether we realize it consciously or not, and this was one of them. Such was the enfolding nature of both band's music, which sort of demanded smiles and cheers with its fundamental exuberance and joie de vivre.
This "review" may seem all broad strokes but neither New Monsoon nor Izabella can be easily summed up in a few words. Almost ten years on I'm still curious where they're gonna take me and the rest of an audience. I'm still intrigued with their highly individual senses of what constitutes "rock," and I'm continually impressed at their warmheartedness and ability to express it through song. I could wax poetic about the borderless interplay of NM's Bo Carper's glassy banjo and Parikh's heartbeat percussion, or the cool dovetailing of guitar styles with Karan and NM's Jeff Miller - two of my all-time favorite six-stringers full of classic rock feel and jazzbo chops. I might crow to you about the bang-up new Chuck Berry style rave-up written and sung by Izabella keyboardist Sam Phelps, or perhaps the delightful shiver the Garcia covers by both bands sent through the crowd - Izabella's "West L.A. Fadeaway" was sexy great and NM's tackling of "Mission In The Rain" was stunning and a bittersweet reminder of the incredible gigs they did at the much missed 12 Galaxies. But this night was too sweet, too dear to be picked apart and dissected for its constituent parts. Talent will out, or at least it surely did this evening in San Francisco.

Signed Phish Posters Auction
Phish The first Mimi Fishman Foundation online charity auction of the new decade has recently launched. The auction features over 30 limited edition posters from various 2009 Phish shows, including the year-end Miami run and Festival 8. All the posters are signed by each of the members of Phish and in most cases the poster artist as well; Phish famed artist Jim Pollock included. Making the posters extremely rare is the fact the band signed only 5 posters from each show.
The beneficiaries of the auction proceeds include the Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments, a wonderful organization that extends services to visually impaired children ages birth to three as well as their families - as well as the SPCA of Syracuse, an organization which was very close to Mimi's heart and where she got her cat Valentine.
Bidding on the auction concludes Monday, March 1; with each auction item having its own specific end time. Bid on items at mimifishman.org/auctions.

SET FOR RELEASE MAY 4, 2010 ON WARP RECORDS
Flying Lotus Flying Lotus has grown into the position of being far more than a producer, he has helped materialize a far-reaching strain of musical ideology that has encompassed not only a global family of like-minded artists, but also a nearly infinite palate of planetary (and interplanetary) sonics. Now he returns with Cosmogramma on May 4.
On his new album an entirely new range of sounds has been unlocked by our intrepid astral traveler, but every genre touchstone associated with his name has been merged into a self-described space opera. Seamless in execution and too wide in scope to properly describe, it is the authentic embodiment of his unique musical heritage. The spirit of his famed aunt, Alice Coltrane permeates the record, notably in the powerful collaborations with relative Ravi Coltrane, bass virtuoso Thundercat and the brilliant harp prodigy, Rebekah Raff.
Certainly these are further reaches into a musical space that Flying Lotus had hitherto been exploring, however other collaborators such as Erykah Badu and Outkast string arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and guest vocalists Thom York and a returning Laura Darlington help deliver Cosmogramma to dizzying new heights. All this name-dropping, however, is not to detract from the genius of the wizard-like figure behind it all. The most powerful aspect of FlyLo's output has always been it s ability to communicate his boundless love and enthusiasm for music in all it's forms and that is what is boldly on display here.

John Butler Trio:
April Uprising Out 4/6
John Butler Trio John Butler returns with his first album in three years, April Uprising, to be released April 6. The album finds the multi-platinum Australian artist with a new line up and a new label in the States, ATO Records.
Recorded in Melbourne, Australia at Sing Sing Studios, April Uprising is the follow-up to 2007's critically acclaimed and globally successful release, Grand National, which yielded a No. 1 U.S. Triple A single, "Better Than," and rave reviews for its sophisticated mix of guitar stylings, hip hop beats and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics. The release also attracted a global audience and found the former busker-turned-international-recording-and-touring artist appearing at music fests worldwide performing as the John Butler Trio.
April Uprising, Butler's most focused, diverse and accessible album to date, has already yielded a No. 1 song on the Australian charts with its first single, "One-Way Road." A video for the single can be viewed on the JBT website here.
This spirit of renewal and rebirth was the culmination of an especially momentous period in Butler's life. It began with the seemingly innocuous act of cutting his hair and taking a few months off in late 2008. But it was his appearance on the Australian TV series, Who Do You Think We Are, which takes well-known artists and traces their family trees, which turned out to be a life-changing experience, leading him on the personal and spiritual journey that inspired the revolutionary tone of the album.
Although many of the tracks for the April Uprising had been written, the experiences that ultimately inspired the album's title came about through Butler's incredible journey with the series' documentary filmmakers. He started the voyage hoping to find poets, musicians, and revolutionaries in his past. Instead, he traced the Butler name through generations of hardship to a matriarch who sang for her survival and he traced his Bulgarian ancestry to a forebearer caught up in a violent revolt. Getting to know his ancestors - trailblazers, idealists and bona fide revolutionaries - helped him to make profound sense of his passions as a writer and musician.
Butler unveiled his new band mates in June 2009: Melbourne musician Nicky Bomba (drums and percussion) and Byron Luiters (bass) from Sydney outfit Ray Mann Three. The newly revitalized JBT recorded with long-time engineer Robin Mai and found themselves with 22 songs - 16 of which made it on the album - and a whole new musical palette in the can: playful and explosive, rhythmically complex and melodically immediate, charged with new purpose but more committed than ever to the principles of classic song craft.
Between the epic opening track, "Revolution," and a whispered acoustic coda, "A Star is Born," dedicated to John's son, April Uprising is an album that combines the personal, the political and the musically memorable with skill and passion.
JBT will be touring their highly acclaimed live show to all corners of the world with many iconic festivals throughout 2010, including a sold out North American promo tour of major markets in February, followed by a full U.S. tour scheduled for late May through June 2010.
